Sponsorship saves BMX event

The eLan Group, in conjunction with the Blythedale Coastal Resort, announced late last week the rescue of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup event in Pietermaritzburg, after a local sponsor agreement fell through. This sponsorship also ensures that the 2010 UCI BMX World Championships will be held in South Africa as scheduled.

“As a KwaZulu-Natal-based company, we are delighted to be associated with the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup,” said Mark Taylor, CEO of The eLan Group. “At this economically trying time, it's vital to ensure a major international event like this takes place because the benefits to the local community, in terms of tourism, business and youth upliftment, are far reaching.”

Most of the world's best BMX racers will compete at the World Cup, which is the first event where qualifying points for the 2012 Olympic Games will be on offer. The event will be held on a purpose-built track at the Royal Agricultural Showgrounds Pietermaritzburg from 20-22 August.
