    SA set to abandon digital TV standard

    South Africa looks likely to ditch its 2006 decision to adopt Europe's digital video broadcasting terrestrial (DVB-T) standard for digital terrestrial television (DTT).

    That's the word from communications department director-general Mamodupi Mohlala, who says that although SA has not decided on a future digital broadcasting standard, experts have advised the department that DVB-T has proved technically "problematic" and that it would therefore make more sense to deploy its successor standard, DVB-T2, or some other standard.

    The move comes four years after SA and the other countries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) made a commitment to migrate from analogue to digital television using the original DVB-T standard. Instead, the region will now probably adopt either Japan's integrated digital service broadcasting terrestrial (ISDB-T) standard, which most industry players are not in favour of, or it will choose DVB-T2.
