    Job description

    Key purpose of role

    To conceptualise, produce, shoot and edit multimedia pieces for publication on digital platforms.
    To assist in the production of major projects such as documentaries and live events, providing input on treatments and delivery mechanisms. To innovate in the multimedia space, devising new and untried treatments and approaches. To cover daily news, across all beats, and to conceptualise and work on original feature pieces. Take full accountability and responsibility by executing all specified functions within the role and adhering to processes, policies and procedures and always abiding by the company’s values. Take on a secondary lead role in the multimedia team when required.

    Key performance areas

    Implementation:

    • Conceptualise, produce, shoot, and edit multimedia pieces for digital platforms – and do so with technical excellence.
    • Pitch and develop original multimedia ideas with strong treatments.
    • Cover daily news and feature stories across all beats.
    • Take photos of newsmakers and events and source additional visual material.
    • Create social media teasers and graphics where it may be applicable, to support content dissemination.
    • Innovate in multimedia storytelling, experimenting with new formats and approaches.
    • Write captions for photos captured.
    • Write scripts for video and, where possible, full written stories for the website.
    • Do voiceovers for video stories where applicable.
    • Livestreaming news events.
    • Manage equipment readiness (cameras, lights, editing software).
    • Ensure timely delivery of all multimedia outputs for digital and broadcast platforms.
    • Contribute to growth of EWN’s YouTube channel and app audience through engaging content.
    • Stay updated on multimedia trends and technology to improve output quality.

    Quality control:

    • Ensure all multimedia content meets editorial standards for accuracy, fairness, and clarity.
    • Perform quality checks on video outputs, including visual and audio integrity.
    • Maintain consistency in brand tone and style across platforms.
    • Verify compliance with copyright, ethical guidelines, and company values.
    • Archive and back up footage properly to prevent data loss.
    • Monitor analytics (e.g., YouTube) to assess performance.
    • Apply sound judgment in sensitive stories, ensuring visuals and tone are appropriate.
    • Troubleshoot technical issues quickly to avoid delays in publishing.
    • Follow SOPs, internal processes and workflows for multimedia production and publishing.

    Team management:

    • Step in as acting lead when required.
    • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior journalists, sharing best practices in filming, editing, and storytelling.
    • Assist in planning major projects (documentaries, live events) and contribute to treatment development.
    • Collaborate effectively across teams (editorial, digital, production) to ensure cohesive content delivery.
    • Communicate clearly and proactively about progress, challenges, and deadlines.

    Requirements

    Minimum required qualification:

    • Matric or equivalent
    • Relevant tertiary qualification
    • A valid drivers’ license

    Qualifications considered advantageous:

    • Qualification in graphic design/animation and visual effects

    Minimum years of experience:

    • At least five years’ experience in a professional news environment

    Additional role requirements:

    • Present a portfolio of work in multimedia journalism.
    • Computer Literacy skill.
    • Excellent skills in filming, video editing, photography.
    • Technical camera expertise, especially with DSLRs and mirrorless cameras
    • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and other multimedia production tools.
    • A good understanding of YouTube, it’s analytics and restrictions, and proficiency in other video and social media platforms.
    • In-depth knowledge of news and current affairs landscape especially in South Africa.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Storyboarding ability.
    • Demonstrable knowledge of social media, and the role multimedia plays in social media.
    • Experience with livestreaming software and producing live events.
    • Ability to write full written stories for website highly advantageous.
    • Graphic design ability highly advantageous.
    • Demonstrable knowledge of After Effects highly advantageous.
    • The ability to file stories for radio news bulletins is highly advantageous.
    • Team player with ability to work independently and show initiative.
    • Ability to work with lots of different personalities and skill sets.
    • Resilient and composed under pressure.
    • Exceptional creativity, attention to detail.
    • Effective time management.
    • A passion for storytelling.
    • Innovative, dedicated and responsible.
    • Ability to receive direction easily.
