Classy Santa Fe ups the stakes

Hyundai's latest Santa Fe people carrier has moved up a number of notches on the large SUV status ladder with a snazzy makeover that includes design touch-ups and a number of additional convenience, practicality and safety features.

The added features not only strengthen its status against the Jeep Cherokee, Land Rover Discovery, Lexus NX and its own family relative, the Kia Sorento, it now also elevates the big Korean to a price and equipment level which makes it an attractive alternative to the likes of Audi and BMW.

The smartened-up Santa Fe is available in two models, a 5-seater with front-wheel drive and a 7-seater equipped with an All-Wheel Drive system (that can be locked when tough terrain demands better grip power distribution). Both vehicles are powered by a 2.2 CRDi engine that develops 145kW and 436Nm which is coupled to a six-speed automatic gearbox with optional manual selection.

Both versions offer Sport, Normal and Eco driving modes with Normal as the default setting. Sport and Eco options (which we played with during the launch drive) can be selected by pressing a switch on the instrument panel. Sadly, 24 hours of torrential rain flooded the off-road mountain trail, where we were going to put the Santa Fe's off-road abilities to the test, was closed for safety reasons.

However, where the Santa Fe really shows its class is when it is being hustled along motorways, back roads and gravel tracks. It dishes up generous helpings of confident, smooth ride and the power-assisted steering feels solid and direct. In spite of its size the Santa Fe also handles the corners with aplomb, even at fair nick.

The stopping power of this big Hyundai is fantastic, ably assisted by ABS, EBD, ESC, and VSM. Should I ever be faced with an emergency situation while piloting a loaded, large SUV, this is the wagon I would choose to be in.

The gearbox does a good job when cruising around town and if you select Sport mode and prod the juice-pedal the cog-swopping process speeds up to add to the fun.

The smartened Santa Fe has a number of class-leading electronic features including, Blind Spot Technology to warn of rear vehicles approaching plus Rear-Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) that warns of approaching traffic when reversing out of areas with low visibility. Smart Cruise Control cleverly maintains a set distance from the vehicles ahead and automatically slows down or accelerates to a pre-set speed and distance when it becomes safe to do so. Further safety features include a host of airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors, daytime running lights and keyless entry.

Harassed end of the month shoppers are going to love the clever tailgate which can be easily opened via the keyless entry fob, particularly when it is raining and the vehicle is parked in an open parking lot!

The cabin is well insulated and the large seats are First Class comfortable. Overall the spacious, airy and richly furnished living quarters ooze quality, underlined by the elegant console trim and lay-out. The stand-out feature is the navigation system which combines with premium sound to provide an easy-to-use interface with the latest in-car audio technology. Further pleasure and convenience features include dual zone climate control, electric windows and mirrors/, radio, CD/MP3/Aux/iPOD/USB, onboard computer, Park Assist (rear with camera) and sunroof.

But the Santa Fe is a lot more than just a finely kitted out vehicle. It looks smart and imposing and its European styling and make-up are spot on - big 19-inch alloys, smart new front and rear bumpers and the redesigned fog and LED daytime running lights framed with new shiny metal trim are quick to attract attention.

What's more, the Korean brags with good "green" credentials --claimed fuel consumption of 8litres/100km for the 2WD 5-seater and 8.3litres/100km for the 7-seater, plus emissions of only 198g/km and 206 g/km

This polished Korean comfortably wears the crown of the king of Hyundai's SUV fleet and it now must also rate as one of the most talented, best-equipped, safest, cleanest and value-for-money options in its class, plus its price tag includes a five-year/150 000km warranty and roadside assistance as well as a five-year/90 000 service plan.
