Baloyi's name was revealed in Cape Town by Marc Lottering, Corné Krige and Tol Ass Mo. Weather interfered with their plans to reveal the winner's name whilst skydiving. Nonetheless, they raised R100,000 for charity and rugby legend Naas Botha even came out of early Twitter retirement in support of #SasNo1.
This was Baloyi's fifth entry into the competition, but the first time he made it into the final. Baloyi started making boerewors 25 years ago when he worked at a butchery in Pretoria. Years of practice finally paid off when he received the grand prize of a brand new Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body L45 following an extensive voting process by the South African public.
Baloyi's recipe will be on sale in all Shoprite and Checkers stores nationwide from 18 September - just in time to celebrate Heritage Day or be enjoyed whilst watching the Rugby World Cup.
The other two Championship Boerewors finalists were Phinah Maimela (37) from Lydenburg, Mpumalanga, and Ayanda Dyanse (28) from Humansdorp, Eastern Cape. All three finalists received gift hampers from sponsors Coca Cola, All Gold and Simba, as well as vouchers from Shoprite and Checkers stores.
