Naartjie Kids peels off to Saudi Arabia

Home-grown clothing retailer Naartjie Kids has opened its first stores in Saudi Arabia as it expands into the Middle East and North Africa.

The South African company has already spread its wings to the US.

Last month it opened seven new outlets, including a flagship store in the Riyadh Gallery Mall.

Saudi Arabia is ranked fifth in the top 10 markets with the greatest potential for retail growth, according to a recent study by global management consulting firm AT Kearney.

"We are also eyeing India, Brazil and China for future Naartjie expansion, said Joe Franceschi, president and CEO of Naartjie.

India, China and Brazil ranked first, third and eighth, respectively, as the markets with the greatest potential according to the study.

The expansion into Saudi Arabia is part of a licence agreement with Fawaz Alhokair & Company, based in Riyadh.

Fawaz plans to open more than 50 more stores by 2015 in the greater Middle East and North African regions.

Naartjie was founded in 1989 in Cape Town by designer Anne Eales. Her team travels extensively to pick up inspiration and fashion trends.

The brand's key ingredients are innovation and fun.

Naartjie SA and the worldwide rights to the brand were bought in 2001 by a group of US investors, but Eales is still involved in designing.

Franceschi said the company had maintained double-digit growth in the past two years, outperforming its peers.

Last year, it opened more stores in a single year than ever before and by the end of this year it will have 52 stores in the US, where it launched in 2001 in Santa Clara, California.

In the US Naartjie Kids also has a growing online business that ships clothes to customers in more than 30 countries.

There are 25 Naartjie stores in SA.
