"After an improved second quarter driven by good festive season trading, the South African supermarket operation increased sales by 7.2%," the company said.

The group's non-RSA supermarkets recorded sales growth of 15.2% "notwithstanding the influence of lower commodity prices and the devaluation of certain currencies", it said.

The financial results for the review period will be published on or about 23 February 2016.
