Nedbank hunts top data talent with R500k challenge

The initiative is being run in partnership with Otinga, OfferZen, Zindi and Microsoft, and reflects growing demand for advanced data and artificial intelligence skills in the financial services sector.
The challenge targets senior practitioners, including data scientists, machine learning engineers and data engineers, rather than students or entry-level participants. Competitors will work on real-world problem statements using anonymised banking datasets, designed to reflect enterprise-level complexity.
According to Nedbank Group chief data and analytics officer John Donnelly, the initiative is intended to support the bank’s broader data strategy while creating a pipeline for specialised talent.
“This challenge reflects our view that data capability is central to the future of financial services,” Donnelly said. “It provides an opportunity for experienced professionals to demonstrate their skills in a real-world context while opening pathways into roles within the organisation.”
The competition will run over several weeks in a virtual format, allowing participants to compete while remaining in full-time roles. It will conclude with an in-person final in Johannesburg on 9 May, where top performers will engage with Nedbank’s data leadership.
A total prize pool of R500,000 will be awarded across the competition, with participants also gaining exposure to potential employment opportunities through the programme and its partners.
Nedbank said top performers would be fast-tracked through its recruitment process, with engagement expected shortly after the final round.
The challenge forms part of a broader effort by the bank and its partners to strengthen South Africa’s data ecosystem, as organisations compete for scarce digital skills.
Registrations for the challenge are open until the end of April.
