MTN Uganda has been voted the most respected company in Uganda in the just concluded "East Africa's Most Respected" companies survey organised by PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Nation Media group.

This is the third time MTN has been voted the "Most Respected Company" in Uganda by the chief executives of East Africa and also emerged second overall in the information communication technology sector over the same period.

"I am extremely proud of this achievement, not withstanding the capacity challenges experienced in the first quarter of the year, the company has continued to enjoy phenomenal growth," said the company's chief executive officer Noel Meier.

Meier said the success of the company demonstrates the strength of the brand and shows that the people of Uganda have a very strong belief on both the ability to deliver on the promise of providing the most extensive, reliable and affordable service in today's market.

"I further believe that this is attributed to the belief in the importance of keeping our customers informed, a practice we have followed since we started our operations some nine years ago in Uganda," Meier said.

He said that this recognition would not have been achieved without the drive and determination of the dedicated people of MTN.

"We are fast approaching the completion of the extensive upgrades undertaken and this will have laid the foundation for further innovation and new propositions to customers," he said.

Launched in 1994, the MTN Group is a multinational telecommunications group operating in 21 countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The MTN Group is also listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in South Africa.

As at 31 March 2007, the company recorded 301 billion subscribers across its operations including those of Investcom LLC which MTN acquired in 2006 and the Irancell that launched commercial operations in the Islamic Republic of Iran recently.

The group operates in Botswana, Cameroon, Cote d'Ivore, Nigeria, Republic of Congo (Congo Brazzavile), Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Uganda and Zambia.

The acquisition of Investcom adds the following countries of operation to MTN'S portfolio to Afghanistan, Benin, Cyprus, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Republic, Liberia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.
