Heinz and Pioneer Foods launch joint venture

HJ Heinz, the US-based multinational and Pioneer Foods have agreed to establish a joint venture company, Heinz Foods South Africa. It will utilise Heinz's world-class technology to manufacture products in South Africa.

"Heinz Foods South Africa combines Heinz's international portfolio of brands and its strength in technology with the marketing and trading know-how of Pioneer Foods," says Brian Küsel, managing director of the new company.

"We will concentrate on four main segments of the South African food market: ketchup, sauces, and condiments; frozen meals and snacks; quick-serve meals and soups; and tuna and seafood."

Heinz's flagship products will now be produced in South Africa – including ketchup, beans and soups. Heinz Foods SA will market products under various brand names, including Today Frozen Foods (formerly a part of Pioneer Foods), John West, Wellington's and Heinz.

"By manufacturing products previously imported into South Africa, the joint venture will create jobs and provide export opportunities to other African countries," says Pioneer Foods managing director, André Hanekom.

Heinz Foods SA will be an independent entity. The transaction is subject to approval by the South African competition authorities.
