Additional performances of the popular comedy ballet Coppélia

Following the success of its season of Coppélia at the Promusica Theatre, The South African Ballet Theatre, the country's largest professional ballet company, is pleased to announce two additional performances of this comedy at its Braamfontein studios on Saturday July 4th and Sunday July 5th 2009.

Both performances will commence at 11h00 and end at approximately 13h10. Tickets cost just R100 for Adults R100, R60 for Pensioners R60 and children (under twelve years old) R50.

Coppélia combines the romance between villagers Swanhilda and Franz with the story of the doll maker Dr Coppelius, whose greatest dream is to create a doll with a soul. Set to the well-known score by Leo Delibes, the ballet enjoys popularity in repertoires worldwide and can be enjoyed in Johannesburg this season marking 139 years since its premiere on 25 May 1870 in Paris. Coppélia is guaranteed entertainment for the whole family and the perfect introductory ballet for those who may not have experienced the glamour, quality, escapism and magic that is The South African Ballet Theatre.
Appearing in the title role on Saturday July 4th is Lauryn Summerley partnered by Humberto Montero as Franz. The cast for Sunday July 5th features Penelope Molfessis as Swanhilda and Chase Bosch as Franz. Dr Coppelius will be performed by Kevin Hurter at both performances. These castings are subject to change.

Both in-studio performances of Coppélia are dedicated to the loving memory of Catherine Burnett who passed away on June 17th 2009. After receiving her ballet training at the Pretoria School for Art, Ballet and Music, Ms Burnett joined PACT Ballet (The South African Ballet Theatre's predecessor) and swiftly rose through the ranks to achieve Principal ranking performing roles such as Lise in La Fille mal Gardée, Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty, Juliet in Romeo & Juliet, and of course, Swanhilda in Coppélia. This homegrown Ballerina played an important role in the nurturing of the younger generation of dancers such as SABT's Principal dancers Burnise Silvius and Iain MacDonald and is fondly remembered by the dance community for her warmth and grace.

There will be just two shows only and early bookings are advised by calling Mr Moagi on 011 877 6898 or
