Agri SA: Mandela day is a time to reflect

"Approaching Mandela day on 18 July, one is again reminded of the phenomenal leadership he displayed and the extent to which this was recognised throughout the world," says Johannes Möller president of Agri SA. "Given the prevailing situation of widespread poverty and unemployment in our country we are also reminded that Mandela stood for "the right to live". This right encompasses basic human rights that are lauded throughout the world.

"Approaching the commemoration of Mandela day, we should not dwell on the many structural and governance problems our country are facing, rather we should by way of introspection and, even if for only 67 minutes, make a tangible contribution to alleviate the plight of the less privileged and to demonstrate compassion towards our fellow citizens" Möller said

According to Möller, Agri SA has also along with similar organisations endorsed a Jobs Pledge mainly aimed at employment creation in our sector and also to enhance the quality of existing jobs. "I'm grateful to companies like Investment Solutions having taken the initiative in this regard" he said

Möller said that his organisation has been involved in related matters like a social compact with other stakeholders for quite some time whilst he made mention of specific upliftment projects in the organisation, its affiliates, and individual farmers are involved in.

"I call on all farmers to, in especially the coming week, make a positive contribution in this regard, not only to allay the many negative reflections in relation to the labour dispensation in the agricultural sector but simply because it is the right thing to do"

"In Agri SA we honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela, we learn from it and implement it wherever we can" Möller concluded.
