Marie Claire magazine announced the winners of the Marie Claire Prix d'Excellence de la Mode awards in Cape Town on Tuesday night at a prestigious dinner hosted by The Showroom. Marianne Fassler walked away with the award for Best South African Designer and Tiaan Nagel was named Best Emerging South African Designer. As well as winning the accolades, each winner received a watch from Michel Herbelin. Lindie Grenfell for Marion and Lindie and Clive Rundle both received Highly Commended awards in the Best South African Designer category. Sanche Frolich for Story and Stiaan Louw both received Highly Commended awards in the Best Emerging South African Designer category.

This is the second year that the magazine has joined its international counterparts in awarding the best in local and international fashion. The local awards run concurrently with the international awards and give local fashion the opportunity to be profiled on a global stage. The South African awards are based on the 2007 Spring/Summer shows held at Sanlam SA Fashion Week, MTN Durban Fashion Week, Cape Town Fashion Week and Audi Jo'burg Fashion Week. A panel of judges nominated eight designers for each category, after which a judging day was held in Johannesburg to choose all the winners. All the international and local winners are profiled in the May issue of Marie Claire magazine, which is on sale from 16 April.
