Malawi GTV subscribers cry foul over liquidation

Malawian subscribers to GTV have cried foul over the manner in which the company has deserted them. In Malawi, GTV services started in 2007 through its local dealer Kameko Technologies which managed to establish a customer base of about 10,000 subscribers.

“Why did they wait until we had paid our subscription to announce that they are liquidating?” queried one subscriber, Vincent Zungwala last Saturday.

He said some subscribers never heard the news of GTV's fate until last Friday, 30 January when they just experienced a sudden blackout of the services and all GTV did was air an apology message saying services had been interrupted.

“We rushed for GTV services because it had 80% beaming rights of English Premiership games,” said Ronald Theu who runs a bottle store in the City of Mzuzu.

Malawian subscribers are now pressing down the GTV local partner to explain to them how they are going to refund them.

“I have been trying to contact the headquarters so that we know what the action plan is,” said Andy Vorster, GTV managing director, who added that they will be having a meeting with the London office and local banks and depending on the outcome they will communicate appropriately.
