Elvis Sibeko, Cape Philharmonic Orchestra to present Dance Can Dance at the Artscape

Award-winning dancer and choreographer Elvis Sibeko and the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra will present Dance Can Dance the Spirit of Enchantment at the Artscape Theatre Centre in Cape Town on 14 and 15 May 2021.

Dance Can Dance the Spirit of Enchantment is an ‘Afro epic cinematic musical dance theatre production’ that aims to celebrate the healing power of dance and music.

The show is inspired by Sibeko’s album Dance Can Dance the Spirit of Enchantment that was released to inspire artists to continue with their creative spirit and ignite them to have ideas that will help others during hard times of lockdown in 2020. The show aims to bring back the spirit of dance and music both from the creative artists and the audience to experience the greatest world of dance that is told through cinematic orchestra music and Afro-fusion dance style. The concert is part of the fundraising programme for all the partners and the company to generate income that will sustain everyone since jobs have been cut due to Covid-19.

The idea for Dance Can Dance was developed during December 2020 during the second lockdown and to achieve his vision; Sibeko sent a proposal to Artscape to use the Opera House and shortly after approached CEO of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra Louis Heyneman to produce the concert together.

Sibeko further sought more avenues to collaborate and partner with other creative theatre-makers in Cape Town to be part of the show. The first partner was Indoni Dance, Arts and Leadership Academy under the artistic direction of Sbonakaliso Ndaba. The second partners are choreographers Mzokuthula Gasa, Maxwell Rani, Janine Booysens and Tercia Alexander Amsterdam.

Special guests include Babalwa Zimbini Makwetu, a Fleur Du Cap award-winner for the Best Sound Design, Original Soundscape or Live Performance 2020, the South African Youth Choir and Mawonga Gayiya.

Commenting on Dance Can Dance, Sibeko writes: “I would like to thank the associates, partners and special guests for believing in my vision, supporting me in all levels in ensuring that my dream comes true. Let us be great examples of creating a strong South African arts industry that is free from its current obstacles and be a centre of attraction for excellence. I’ve been overwhelmed with the many acts of ubuntu to help a young Black creative man to achieve his dreams no matter what the challenges are.”
