World Design Capital 2014 'Make It New' Design House Exhibition

Bizcommunity visited the CCDI's 'Make It New' Design House Exhibition, sponsored by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sports (DCAS) and Cape Town Design NPC, celebrating and showcasing some the fruits of Cape Town's reign as World Design Capital 2014 (WDC 2014) against the majestic Cape Town Stadium backdrop.

The exhibition, curated by Sue Heathcock, Henrique Wilding, Jos Thorne, Jane Solomon, Rayda Becker and Isabell Schneider; and designed by Lyall Sprong and Marc Nicolson of award-winning Thingking, captures and juxtaposes a full range of textural décor and decorative objects fashioned from every conceivable material from wood, to glass, ceramic and beading to metal, rubber, recycled materials, fabrics, plastics and 3D printing, set against artful photographic backdrops sourced from the Western Cape museums archive, which succeed in cleverly contextualising and enhancing the modern work in its historical relevance. Every attention to detail in display and lighting casts fresh eye on Cape Town's prodigious design talents.

So much effort has gone into the curatorship that it is a great pity the exhibition is only on from 15 - 19 October 2014. Don't miss the displays which range from jewellery to furniture, interior décor items and artworks to handbags, toys, crockery and more, which shows how today's Cape creative producers are "making it new".
