Zain Malawi subscribers have welcomed the company's newly upgraded network to third generation (3G) technology. The new technology was launched in Lilongwe this week by Zain Malawi MD Saulos Chilima who said the new technology will reduce the cost of web services for its customers.

"This has now allowed me to easily access the internet and download information and images easily," said a University of Malawi journalism student Bright Mhango.

He said now that Zain has also allowed subscribers to access BBC websites, Twitter and Facebook for free, communication has been very easy.

    Not countrywide yet

"Zain subscribers will now enjoy high value mobile phone services and low cost, including data and image transfers, internet and video calling, in addition to the traditional use of the cell phone of voice and short message transmission," he said.

The 3G technology is however only live on 77 of the company's 360 towers, but the company plans to continue to increase its 3G coverage to reach one third of its entire network by the end of the year.
