    Radio One tops Uganda's Superbrands

Radio One a local FM station, has been named the leading brand in Uganda according to a Survey carried out by brand analysis company Superbrands East Africa, a division of Superbrands United Kingdom.

Radio One topped the list of the official rankings for Uganda, and is closely followed by the Sheraton Kampala Hotel, MTN Uganda, Pepsi a product of Crown Beverages Uganda and telecommunications firm Zain in fifth position, according to Jawad Jaffer the project director Superbrands East Africa.

The official ranking represents views of consumers and experts who participated in this year's Superbrands survey. However, Nokia - a leading mobile and fixed phones and networks provider, emerged the overall top brand in East Africa followed by Unilever's Blue Band margarine and OMO washing detergent. Other winning brands among the 1000 brands that were examined included Milo and cooking fat Kimbo, which are both in the region's top 10. The outcomes represent the reactions of at least 2500 consumers, and experts in a survey carried out by Nairobi-based TNS Research International team, in the markets of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.

The CEO of The Centre Brand Analysis and Chairman of the UK Superbrands Council Stephen Cheliotis said that for local brands to make it to the top reaffirms that they are able to compete with their multinational counterparts, which is excellent news for the economies of East Africa.

“It fundamentally proves that businesses in this region are able to build and maintain brands that can compete with the best from around the world,” he said while unveiling the top 10 brands in the region, in Nairobi on Monday.

Commenting on Nokia's leadership, Cheliotis said; “This survey reaffirms its strong position in the market against newcomers,” said the brand expert who chef guest at the event.
