More time for nominations for crucial judicial posts

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has extended the deadline for nominations for key judicial posts, including a vacancy on the Constitutional Court, "in view of the limited number of nominations received", the commission said in a statement on Tuesday morning.

Dumisa Ntsebeza SC, spokesman for the JSC, said only three nominations had been received for the Constitutional Court post.

The JSC needs to interview, at the very least, four people if there is one vacancy.

The constitution requires the commission to give the president a list of candidates with three more names than the number of vacancies available.

With one post available, this means that the president must be given a list of four candidates, from which he would make his choice.

The closing date for nominations was supposed to be the end of this week, but nominations can now be received until Friday, February 17.
