Details of the exact size of the plant and labour force required are not yet known, but the world's largest smartphone maker is likely to create thousands of jobs over the next few years.

Samsung Electronics this week announced that it would invest $20-million (nearly R220-million) to build a new television plant at the Dube TradePort - a duty-free area adjacent to the harbour in Durban.

Speaking in Seoul, Korea, earlier this month, an upbeat Samsung vice-president Hoon Chung said: "Africa is a very important market to us in terms of investment ... thereby [we] also help create jobs.

"We plan to start construction of the TV plant in South Africa in the latter half of the year," the company said later.

Chung said several factors were considered when deciding on the location.

The new factory reflects the rising demand for consumer goods in Africa and will be Samsung's second such plant on the continent after Egypt.

The Durban plant will supply television sets to other African countries and, according to Samsung, save logistics costs and "solidify our leadership in the TV industry".
