World Cup trophy arrives in Uganda next month

The FIFA World Cup trophy is expected to arrive in Uganda in November 2009, as part of its 86-nation tour, after its short stint in Cairo and Liberia. The trophy will be in the country, between 14 November and 16 November 2009.

According to the Maggie Kigozi, brand manager of Coca Cola in Uganda, on 15 November, “up to 6,000 world cup fans will be given an opportunity to take photos with it at the Lugogo Cricket Oval. There will be a VIP event and a music concert at the same venue graced by Uganda's top artists to celebrate its presence,” Kigozi said in an interview with Bizcomunity.

The trophy was flagged off in Zurich by FIFA president Sepp Blatter and Coca-Cola CEO Muhtar Kent on 21 September 2009. The trophy made its first landing on the African continent in Egypt as part of its four-month world tour and ends in Cape Town South Africa, on 3 December.

Mark Namanya, sports editor at the Daily Monitor newspaper, said the coming of the trophy is a dream come true for him. “Seeing and touching the prize held aloft by such greats like Diego Maradona, Lothar Mattheaus, Dunga and Zinedine will almost feel like being in South Arica for the 2010 World Cup,” he said.

For the country the editor said, it was an honour. “We have never qualified for the World Cup and will probably not do so in the next five decades. But who knows what inspiration the kids of today might get from seeing the coveted trophy?”
