    Revolutionary new label applicator installation

Leading South African self-adhesive label manufacturer, Rotolabel, has successfully installed a "first" in the South African wine industry in the form of an Avery Dennison ALS 600 EURO print and apply label application system. The system has been installed at world-famous wine estate, Fairview.

The line comprises three self-adhesive label application heads for front, back and neck labels and incorporates Avery Dennison's unique print-and-apply technology. It has revolutionised Fairview's ability to overcome the problems associated with information requirements inherent when dealing with distributors and exporting all over the world.

Furthermore, the ability to print variable information e.g. batch codes, bar codes, logos, text, etc, on a label at the point of application without having to slow the filling line down, not only reduces significantly the cost attached to holding pre-printed labels in stock, but also enhances the flexibility in respect of executing orders.

Charles Back of Fairview comments: "We need to be better and more efficient all the time. Print and apply is a real step forward in increasing our turn-around times. Make no mistake, being a leader can present pit falls and teething problems, but having overcome these, we now see the wisdom behind the decision to go this route."

Almore van Rensburg, under whose auspices this division of Rotolabel is managed, said the introduction of the new applicator was a significant development in self-adhesive labelling as customers were now able to print at will and constantly change the content of their labels without holding up the entire production process caused by having to change rolls of pre-printed label.

"There has become a real need for variable information on wine labels and the print and apply system allows this information detail to be 'written' at the point of application while at the same time being able to run the bottling line at up to 12000 units per hour," Van Rensburg said.

"We are proud to be the label-manufacturer to have introduced this technology to the South African market as it is a very positive step in its development," he said.
At the heart of the ALS 600 EURO is the stainless-steel housing containing the electronics, the versatility of which caters for the individuality and flexibility in the configuration each installation requires. It is from this point that all modules are co-ordinated, including the conveyor belt, dispensing heads, wrap-around or indexing units and the print and apply control, to illustrate a few.

The sturdy stainless-steel base frame provides rigid support for the dispensing heads, guaranteeing outstanding labelling accuracy.

The flexible modular design also ensures that the most suitable configuration can be supplied to suit customers' individual needs.
