Eskom pushing for mandatory power cuts

Eskom says that it may ask government to impose a mandatory Energy Conservation Scheme (ECS) to force domestic and commercial consumers to reduce power consumption by 10% according to an article published in Business Report.

It says the voluntary ECS had seen 134 companies joining the project and already these companies have saved 5% of the electricity they were using prior to the scheme being introduced.

Eskom has warned that power cuts might result during the warmer summer weather as the utility has to undertake routine maintenance at its power plants and does so when electricity demand is lower.

Standard tariffs for electricity are 2,5-times higher in winter than in summer and the peak tariffs can increase by 3,5-times. As a result, Eskom says, large power users tend to cut the amount of power they consume in the winter months.
