Dawson, who retired two seasons ago after a 14-year career with Western Province and the Cobras, handed over the playing kit to the 15 players who will compete with teams from seven different countries in the inaugural Champions League.
"There was a palpable air of excitement among the players," said Chief Executive Andre Odendaal. "The coach couldn't have asked for a better person to hand over the kit than Alan, with his record of grit, determination, loyalty and character during his playing days."
Odendaal said the squad, who fly to India on Friday, were pioneers in a new era for franchise cricket.
"It is tremendously exciting," said Odendaal. "Up until now domestic teams have only travelled locally, with the odd exception, such as Western Province's pre-season tour of Australia in 1995/96."
Odendaal said participation in the Champions League provided the Cape Cobras with an opportunity to test their skills against some of the best players in the world.
It also meant a financial windfall for the franchise. "As an example we were able to negotiate a deal worth more than a million rand for sponsorship of the playing kit." The new tournament sponsors of the franchise are Karbonn Mobiles, Ultra Tech, Royal Stag and Reebok SA.
In terms of the participation agreement, a party of 23 will travel to India with their costs paid for by the Champions League - 15 players, five support staff and three officials.
The Cape Cobras play the Indian Premier League runners-up, Royal Challengers Bangalore, in the tournament's opening match in Bangalore next Thursday, followed by a clash with the Otago Volts of New Zealand in Hyderabad two days later.
