SABC renews Design Indaba sponsorship

For the third year running, the national public service broadcaster sponsors a “by invitation only” masterclass on 26 February.

The masterclass will be headed by Lynda Relph-Knight, who has been the editor of Design Week since 1989. The role encompasses editing the world's first and only weekly design magazine and its daily website, as well as overseeing the Design Week Awards and Benchmarks prize scheme for branding. A fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, in 2001 Relph-Knight received an honorary MA from the Surrey Institute of Art & Design and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. She is also an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Art.

In addition, the SABC once more sponsors The Loerie Awards Travelling Exhibition - a local and international road show showcasing award winning communication work. The launch of The Loerie Awards Annual publication and Travelling Exhibition takes place at Design Indaba on 25 February.

South Award

Realising the need to fortify and celebrate South African creativity, Design Indaba last year partnered with the Creative Circle and The Loerie Awards to form the Creative Alliance and announced the South Award and exhibition, sponsored by the SABC.

The South exhibition will celebrate legends who have pioneered the upswing in a display of top SA creative icons of the past few years. The 35 South exhibition and competition finalists will debut at the 2009 Design Indaba and three South winners will receive cash prizes to the value of R100 000, R50 000 and R25 000 on 1 March at 5pm in the expo fashion arena.

The South documentary, co-produced by Interactive Africa and Miles Goodall of Suburban Films, uncovers the layers of inspiration fuelling SA graphic design, art, dance, music and product design.

The South exhibition will later travel the country and also internationally.
