#Mandela100: NMBT raises a special centenary flag for Madiba

To celebrate Mandela Day and its initiatives around the Nelson Mandela Bay, Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism (NMBT) hosted a flag hoisting ceremony at Donkin, which saw the public witness the raising of a special edition Nelson Mandela Centenary flag, measuring 7m by 12m, which will fly below the South African flag on the65m flagpole. In honour of Madiba, the raising of the Centenary Flag paves the way forward for Mandela Fridays, which will see the flag hoisted every week, also aimed at building a culture of humanity and kindness.

"As a destination named after Nelson Mandela, we feel it is our duty to celebrate his centenary well beyond today. We will continue our efforts to spread the true spirit and essence of Madiba through Mandela Fridays," said Mandlakazi Skefile, NMBT CEO.

Showing commitment through action, NMBT has pledged its support to Andisa Liba, originally from this city, who was selected to join the global Trek4Mandela campaign.

Currently participating to summit Mount Kilimanjaro today to raise funds for the purchase of sanitary towels for over 500,000 underprivileged school girls around the country who cannot afford them, and who often end up staying absent from school due to menstrually related challenges.

Commenting on the continued efforts to support and celebrate the Mandela Centenary, Skefile added: "Today we witnessed a historic moment in our city with the raising of the Centenary Flag. But today we are also here to call on our residents to support the Trek4Mandela Campaign, by purchasing and donating sanitary towels at any of the allocated drop off points NMBT has made available around the Bay and by donating to the pledge line. Let’s make a concerted effort and keep our girls in school!"

In addition, NMBT has additional drop off points are as follows:

• Transnet has various boxes throughout their buildings for donations
• Transnet Fishing Competition Day will also be a consolidated collection point
• Shoprite/I-Management Events have collection boxes and drop off points
• Bay FM Community Radio station
• Kingfisher FM Community Radio station

The Mandela Centenary Campaign will continue throughout this year, with Andisa returning from her trek and conducting the handover of sanitary towels to the beneficiaries around Women’s Day in August.

An SMS donation line has been created for the public to donate to the initiative: SMS ANDISA to 42513 - all proceeds go to Caring for Girls an Imbumba Foundation initiative. Competition closes on 20 July 2018 and the winner will be announced on 1 August 2018.
