Nkandla report classification clarified

PRETORIA: The State Security Ministry says it has noted with concern various media reports relating to the classification of the Inkandla Upgrade Task Team report and the role of the Minister of State Security Siyabonga Cwele.

Ministry spokesperson Brian Dube on Monday, 1 July 2013, said it was factually incorrect that Cwele had classified the report 'top secret' or issued an instruction to this effect, as claimed in some media reports.

"In terms of the prevailing classification regime, the author of the report is the one who classifies it. As the report is authored by the Task Team and owned by the commissioning Minister of Public Works, the Minister of State Security cannot classify or de-classify it or issue instructions to this effect," explained Dube.

The report emanates from the work done by a JCPS Task Team appointed by Cwele and Minister of Public Works Thulas Nxesi to probe various irregularities associated with the upgrade at President Jacob Zuma's house in Nkandla.

Dube said Nxesi was busy with this matter and would continue his work in this regard.

Nxesi has already issued a statement detailing the core issues of the inquiry. From the JCPS cluster, Dube said the intention and advice was for this report to be tabled to the relevant committee of Parliament.
