RelatED Education is offering free workplace-ready training in the retail sector to students in Gauteng and Free State who have recently obtained a matric certificate, diploma or degree.

Designed to prepare successful candidates for the world of work, the eight-week training programme will be both classroom and shop floor-based.

Candidates will learn all aspects of running a small business during the eight weeks, including:

• Understanding and applying financial concepts
• Preparing store operations
• Understanding the changing business market
• Demonstrating the concept of shrinkage and losses
• Demonstrating an understanding of legislation applicable to small retail businesses

They will also be exposed to factors that impact the bottom line, including:

• The relationship between the bottom line and impacting factors
• How net profit is derived within an operational unit
• How your own job can impact the bottom line

The retail sector opens doors to 67 different possible career options including marketing, merchandising, human resources, information technology, financial management, auditing, procurement, supply chain management, customer service management and administration. With an annual turnover of over R1trn, South Africa’s retail sector is the fourth largest contributor to the country’s GDP, with an active workforce of close to two million people.

High-demand skills

RelatED Education has trained over 9,000 learners in the retail sector for the last seven years. Many of these learners are in senior management positions today. “We hire for attitude and train for skill,” says RelatED’s CEO Leigh Blochlinger.

Blochlinger adds that relevant skills are in demand within the retail sector. “This means that the candidate with a relevant qualification, right attitude and passion is highly prized when it comes to recruiting in this industry. Also, the wealth of career opportunities the retail sector offers gives so many young people a chance to find themselves a fulfilling career.”

RelatED’s workplace ready eight-week training courses start from July 2019 and will run until mid-June 2020. Candidates who complete the training will earn a certificate accredited by the Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&RSeta).
