Sports journalists score big

David Isaacson (Sunday Times), James Shikwambana (SABC Radio) and Neil Andrews (M-NET's SuperSport) have emerged as the overall category winners of the SAB Sports Journalists of the Year Awards, while Paralympic swimming gold medallist Natalie du Toit was voted as the Most Media-Friendly Sports Personality of the Year, an award made for the first time.

Judge Guy Hawthorne says: "Obviously, the number of entries (112) was very encouraging, as was the fact that so many of them were women. The one rather disappointing category this year was news. There appeared to be little effort to go out and find that news story that no-one else had. A report on the traditional post-match conference does not really constitute a breaking news story."

Michael Farr, SAB Limited's communications manager, says: "SAB's sponsorship of this event is primarily to encourage excellence in media reporting, while maintaining the company's close connection and commitment to the world of South African sport.

Ray Williams was the recipient of the prestigious Hall of Fame award for lifetime achievement in sports coverage.

Rodney Hartman of the Sunday Times says: "One of the great characters in South African sports writing during the 1960's and 70's, Ray was a true pro, with an eye for an angle, adroitness with words and original phrases, and an exceptional general knowledge.

"Among his other achievements was the role he played, in association with Sunday Times colleague Norman Canale and former Springbok cricketer Eric Rowan, in getting limited overs cricket started in South Africa. Some critics said it would never work."
