SABC needs a news head with 'clear vision' says ANC

The SA Broadcasting Corporation needs a news head with "clear vision" who can "reflect the developmental challenges" facing the country, the ANC said earlier this week.
SABC needs a news head with 'clear vision' says ANC

The ruling party said it noted the news of the imminent end of current head of news Snuki Zikalala's contract.

"We hope that the board will seriously headhunt for a person with a clear vision to develop a news team that understands development journalism," the African National Congress said in a statement.

SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago confirmed the end of Zikalala's contract but again declined to comment on whether or not his contract will be renewed. His contract is reported to end at the end of April.

"We do not as a matter of policy discuss whether we will renew his, or anyone else's contract," he said.

The ANC Youth League was less subtle about its feeling on whether Zikalala's contract should be renewed, saying: "Don't renew the contract of Snuki Zikalala, and dispossess him of anything that will allow him access to SABC Offices.

"The ANCYL is for a truly independent and credible public broadcaster, and Snuki Zikalala does not represent such values," the league's spokesman Floyd Shivambu said in a statement.

The ANC also expressed concern about the "instability" in the leadership of the broadcaster.

This follows the resignation of two members of the SABC board, Christine Qunta and Peter Vundla, in the last two months as well as an investigation into a former SABC executive who is alleged to have wasted money and given contracts to friends.
